The Reality of Socialized Medicine and Medicare for All

We've heard talk lately about "Medicare for All" - the most recent proposal in which the federal government provides so-called "free" healthcare insurance to all Americans. It's just another version of socialized medicine modeled after Canada's.

Previously, I've posted about my dislike for socialized medicine and why I feel the way I do. The question now is, what is the reality of socialized medicine? A recent Forbes.com titled "What Socialized Medicine Looks Like" answers that question by sharing details about Canada's program. I hope you will read that entire article. However, below are some of the highlights:
  1. Primary care doctors in Canada provide fewer services than their counterparts in the U.S. forcing people to go to ERs more often. Average Canadian ER wait = 4 hours.
  2. Number of Canadian women to never have a mammogram = double the number of American women. Has led to the breast cancer mortality rate in Canada being 25% higher than U.S. rate.
  3. Less than 20% of Canadian men have ever been screened for prostrate cancer. 50% of American men have. Has led to Canadian prostate cancer mortality rate being 18% higher than the U.S.'s.
  4. Canadian adults who've had a colonoscopy = 10%. American adults = 30%. Canadian death rate from colorectal cancer is 13% higher than U.S.
  5. Americans are more likely to get treatment for kidney failure (i.e. dialysis or transplant) than those in countries with socialized medicine - 5 times more likely if under 85 years old and 9 times more likely if over 85. People who do not get such treatment will DIE.
  6. Average Canadian wait time after referral from primary care doctor until get to see specialist = 21 weeks (over 5 months).
  7. Average Canadian wait time for CT scan = 4 weeks.
  8. Average Canadian wait time for MRI = nearly 11 weeks (nearly 3 months).
  9. Average Canadian wait time for ultrasound = nearly 4 weeks.
  10. At 21% of Canadian hospitals, a woman must wait over 3 weeks for a biopsy to confirm a possible breast cancer diagnosis. Only 1% of American hospitals have a wait time that long.
  11. At half of Canadian hospitals, a 65 year old must wait over 6 months for a hip replacement. No American hospitals have wait times that long.
Additionally, in Canada, the powerful and rich have more access to specialists and services, more choices, and shorter waiting times. In fact, the poor, non-elderly white population is 22% more likely than similarly situated Americans to be in poor health.

The Forbes.com article also tells of problems within Britain's socialized medicine program. However, I chose to focus on Canada here primarily because it is our next door neighbor.

Some Americans support socialized medicine. Generally, the ones who do are healthy. However, one day each of them could fall victim to illness, accident, or injury they never expected. If that day comes, that's also the time they will fall victim to the pitfalls of socialized medicine as it's generally the sick and weak who have their care rationed in order to save money, because socialized medicine plans are expensive to administer. The cost is also the main reason socialized medicine plans usually fail.

So, knowing what you now know, do you really want socialized medicine and / or "Medicare for All" in the U.S.?

Movie Review - Elysium

Several weeks ago, a buddy and I went to see the movie Elysium, starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster. There really wasn't much playing at the time that looked any good. I had some reservations about Elysium, because of the far left-leaning politics of Damon, but, our wives were out of town, we needed to catch up, and the sci-fi theme looked interesting. Man, were we in for a surprise.

The movie is future-based and is portrayed as taking place on the earth and in a fancy space station known as Elysium. The earth has pretty much been destroyed by years of overpopulation and war. The entire planet is now like a third-world country. Elysium, on the other hand, is a beautiful, luxurious world built by the rich for the rich. Basically, the earth is where the poor live and Elysium is where the rich live. Segregation by social class at its finest.

When the movie started, my radar went up immediately as mostly Spanish is being spoken. As the story-line develops, it continues, and there does not appear to be any middle class on earth or on Elysium, either. You are either a filthy rich legal citizen of Elysium or a dirt poor resident of earth. You may already have a sense of where this is going, but it gets worse. The film ultimately turns out be a multi-million dollar Hollywood propaganda piece promoting amnesty for illegal aliens and universal healthcare. Stay with me, and I'll explain.

The "legal citizens" of Elysium all have chips implanted under their skin that prove their citizenship and give them access to various services, including healthcare. Healthcare on Elysium is interesting, to say the least. Each legal resident has a medi-bay in their home. The medi-bays look much like a tanning bed. If you have a medical ailment, whether it be a cold, cancer, heart disease, etc., all you have to do is lay down in the medi-bay for a few minutes and it "cures" you. However, if you don't have the little implanted chip, the medi-bay doesn't work.

Smugglers on earth make money providing shuttle rides to the "illegals" on earth who want to try to sneak into Elysium. Most of the time, people are trying to leave earth for Elysium in order to get in one of the medi-bays to get cured of whatever. Basically, if you are a legal citizen of Elysium, you get great healthcare, a "cadillac" health plan if you will. However, if you are poor, stuck on the earth, and an "illegal," you have very limited healthcare, if you have any at all.

One scene in the movie shows three of the shuttles leaving earth headed to Elysium. Jodie Foster's character, the Secretary of Defense, orders them to be shot down. Two of them are, but one crash lands on Elysium. We then see "Homeland Security" robots round up the "illegals" on the crashed shuttle and immediately deport them back to earth. Sound familiar? Those evil rich people. They just want to keep the poor, illegals down. Yea .... I know - I'm overdoing it on the sarcasm again. Hang with me, though, there's more.

Spider, one of the smugglers, devises a plot where Max, Matt Damon's character, goes to Elysium to download computer data, so that Spider can use it to hack Elysium's computer system. Now, what's Spider's plan? The plan is to change Elysium's database and make everyone on earth legal Elysium residents. Wow - just like that ... amnesty for everyone! No more illegals. Woohooo! Now all the sick or injured poor, illegals on earth can go to Elysium and get healed. Isn't it great?

So, as I said, Elysium is nothing more than a political statement by Hollywood supporting amnesty for illegal aliens and universal health care for all. It even contains the emotional, tugging at your heartstrings moment where the daughter, Matilda, of Max's friend, Frey, is smuggled from earth to Elysium for medical care because she has leukemia. There's a rush against the clock to get the database hacked and Matilda to Elysium and into a medi-bay before the leukemia kills her. The message is,"who would be so heartless as to deny medical care to a sick, dying little girl." It's the same emotional argument the left always uses - "it's for the children."

Needless to say, my blood pressure was up a little by the time the movie was over. It reminded me of :
  • the pro-Palestinian political statement that U2 made during one of their concerts I attended a few years ago, and
  • Cars 2, which made a point of bashing the big, bad, rich oil companies for getting rich at the expense of the environment. That movie also promoted alternative automobile fuels, such as ethanol. The fact is that ethanol damages engines and requires more of our water supply to produce than gasoline. I even remember one scene in Cars 2 where a large, older model car was made fun of by the other cars for using more gas than them.
I think most Americans would agree with me when I say that when I pay my good money to be entertained, whether it be for a movie or a concert, I do not want politics to be shoved down my throat. It doesn't matter whether the politics lean right or left. It's not what I'm there for. I can watch that crap at home for free. When I go to a movie, it's because I want to get away from all the crap of regular every day life for just a little while, have some fun, and enjoy myself. It's an escape. When the producer brings politics into it, it completely ruins the experience.

I know someone's gonna leave a comment on this post along the lines of "you just hate immigrants." No, I don't. If you are an American citizen, and not a Native American, then you descended from immigrants, me included. I have no problem with immigrants or immigration. That is, legal immigrants and legal immigration. If you want to come to the U.S., come on. However, follow our laws and regulations. Do it the right way. Don't try to slip in the back door and expect to be welcomed with open arms. Not only is it unlawful and wrong, but it's basically trespassing. I don't know of anywhere trespassers are warmly welcomed. Do you?

I think Elysium is off the big screen now. However, if it isn't where you live, consider yourself warned. Don't spend your $11 or $12 on Hollywood leftist propaganda. If that's what you're into, just stay home and turn on CNN or MSNBC. It will be much cheaper.

As for Hollywood, would you people please leave the politics out of movies? I like going to movies, but if this crap continues, I can always stay at home or go to a ballgame.

Power Ball Numbers and ObamaCare

Well, ladies and gentlemen I hate to say, "I told you so ....", but, "I told you so." On Wednesday, I predicted that the U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) would NOT strike down ObamaCare. I did so because of SCOTUS' decision to gut Arizona's controversial SB 1070 anti-illegal immigration law. Their SB 1070 decision was the handwriting on the wall that ObamaCare would be upheld. I also said that I thought "... the best we could hope for was for a portion of it (ObamaCare) to be held unconstitutional." I nailed that, too, but it doesn't help us much. Apparently, Progressivism has now infected SCOTUS in addition to Congress and the White House.

Health care systems and single payer
Health care systems and single payer (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
So, what does it all mean ? Well, if you've read some of my other posts on ObamaCare, you know it means we're headed down the road to a single-payer system like Canada and England have. It means long waits for surgeries and appointments with your doctor. It means that ultimately healthcare will be rationed and the elderly and folks with disabilities and pre-existing conditions will be denied care, because it's too expensive. It also means that the budget deficit will grow by leaps and bounds. If you think the country is broke now, you ain't seen nothing yet.

Mr. Romney is talking about repealing ObamaCare if elected to the presidency. Really ? ObamaCare was modeled after the RomneyCare debacle that he signed into law while governor of Massachusetts. He loves government-run health care regardless of what he says. He has flip-flopped on issues more than a largemouth bass does with a hook in its lip. If you actually believe Romney will repeal ObamaCare, then maybe I can hook you up with a great piece of ocean front property in Arizona. Think about it - it'd be great. You might even get to hang out with that state's knuckleheaded Republican Governor Jan Brewer once you're there

Whew - I feel better. I've vented. Now, if I could just come up with the winning PowerBall numbers for tomorrow night as easily as I predicted what SCOTUS would do. That would be awesome. Only problem would be that "Uncle Barry" would take at least half of my winnings.

2012 Presidential Prognostication

The 2012 Presidential race is beginning to take shape. Some candidates are in, some are out, and some are still thinking about it. Some of us have already decided about whether Obama should be re-elected. Others have already decided which of the Republican challengers they will support. Personally, I've only decided on who I will NOT support and that includes Obama, Mitt Romney, and Newt Gingrich. The reasons why follow. I do think, however, that there is one name that we have not heard much of in a while that could be "the wild-card" in the race. I think this person could sneak in and win the race easily if they play their cards right.

It is no secret that I am not a fan of Barack Obama. Maybe he's a nice guy and fun to be around, but I don't know because I've never met him. The problem I have with him is his liberal progressive agenda. His stance on issues important to me are the opposite of mine. For instance, he's o.k. with abortion. I'm not because I believe all human life is precious. I like guns and support the right to keep and bear them, and he doesn't. He believes in redistribution of wealth, and I don't. I think that if you work hard and earn your wealth that you should get to keep it and not be forced to share. If you want to share it, that should be your decision not the "gubmint's." Obama likes higher taxes, and I don't. I think socialized medicine sucks, and he wants to force everyone onto it. He has insulted and turned his back on our allies while befriending and apologizing to our enemies for "America's sins." He has spent billions of dollars to bailout failing car companies that should have been allowed to go under due to their failed business plan. Obama sent our military into Libya when that country had not attacked or threatened us in a long time. I could go on and on, but the fact is that me and Mr. Obama agree on pretty much nothing. Oh, and before I forget - his wife said she has only been proud of her country once. Mine is always proud of hers. Her husband, me, is still alive because of American ingenuity. I didn't vote for Obama in 2008 and won't in 2012 either.

The GOP has a number of candidates that will try to defeat Obummer next year. I think it's a lackluster crop at best. Not one of their current declared candidates makes me want to walk into the voting booth today and vote for them. For instance :
  • Mitt Romney - While governor of Massachusetts, he raised numerous taxes and fees. His socialized medicine scheme, "RomneyCare," has left the state broke and scores of people have had to be kicked off it's rolls. It's rationing at it's finest. When criticized about the failed system, he stands by it. A leader would admit the mistake and learn from it. Romney's not presidential material.
  • Newt Gingrich - The Newt is the former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. He is on record as supporting the ObamaCare individual mandate requiring Americans to purchase health insurance. Gingrich is also a womanizer having not one, but two marriages fail due to his extramarital affairs. Newt is unfit to be president because the affairs show he has a lack of integrity, no loyalty, and can't be trusted.
  • Herman Cain - Cain is a newcomer to presidential politics. Many conservatives like him. I have concerns about his ideas to replace the income tax with a national sales tax. In my opinion, a national sales tax, or consumption tax, would be devastating to the frail national economy. It's a bad idea that I doubt he could get passed into law.
  • Tim Pawlenty - Pawlenty was for Obama's Cap and Trade, a.k.a. Cap and Tax, proposal before he was against it. Obama said that it would cause energy prices to "necessarily skyrocket." Cap and Trade would hurt the economy further. Pawlenty ain't the guy either.
  • Ron Paul - I'll admit that Paul does bring a lot of energy to the table. I like his idea about auditing the Fed. However, he has a tendency to come off as a little nutty. He has recently made some rather "off the wall" comments about the operation in Libya and about Bin Laden's death. I'm not expecting his candidacy to get much traction or last very long.
There are also still a number of Republicans who have not made up their minds about whether they will run or not. Donald Trump was in then out. Now, there's a rumor that he might get back in as an Independent. If he does, perhaps Brett Favre would be a good running mate. Rumors are also floating around that Rudy Guiliani and Texas Governor Rick Perry may enter the race. And of course, we're still waiting on Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann to make an announcement one way or the other. Personally, of all the ones mentioned, only Perry, Palin, or Bachmann interest me.

Official portrait of Secretary of State Hillar...So, by now you're probably thinking, "Alright Sheepdog, who is this 'wild-card' candidate you mentioned earlier ?" It's simple - Hillary Clinton (pictured right). And yes, I know she's already said she wasn't going to run and has no interest in being president (see Politico.com article below). However, I think she might change her mind. Usually, such a political flip-flop would hurt a campaign. However, if there's anyone who could sell it and get the American people to overlook it and buy it, it's the Clintons. They got the American people to overlook Slick Willy's womanizing and Whitewater, didn't they ? So, just hear me out.

My reasons for thinking Hillary might enter the race are :
  1. Obama promised to turn the economy around. He hasn't done it. He said the Stimilus Bill would keep unemployment from going over 8%. It's at 9% now and has been over 8% since the Spring of 2009. No president since FDR has been re-elected with unemployment over 7%. Obama attacked Bush for the high gas prices. Gas prices are now double what they were at the time of Obama's inauguration.
  2. Obama promised to get out of Iraq and Afghanistan. Not only has he not gotten out of those two conflicts, he's now began a military operation in Libya. The lefty anti-war crowd is not happy about it. Many of them supported Obama in 2008 because he promised to get out of Iraq / Afghanistan.
  3. Obama promised the anti-gunners more gun control. These folks have deep pockets and aren't happy about him not keeping his promise. Sarah Brady recently had a meeting with him "to discuss it."
  4. There have been reports that George Soros and other wealthy supporters of liberal causes don't feel like Obama has given them their money's worth. These folks poured millions of dollars into Obama's campaign and expected a little payback. They haven't got it. Hillary Clinton is tight with many in that crowd and likely wouldn't have any trouble getting financing for her campaign from them.
  5. Hillary has already announced that she will be leaving the Obama Administration if there is a second term. Could this be her way of transitioning off and planning a presidential run for 2012 ?
  6. The Clinton's like power. Hillary will be 64 late this year. She's running out of time if she is ever gonna run. It could be now or never.
Furthermore, you could throw out the six reasons I've listed above as to why Hillary Clinton will run for president, and there's one that's more important that trumps them all. I'll call it the "George Washington Card." Now, before you conservatives jump on me for comparing Hillary Clinton to George Washington, let me explain. First of all, she is not George Washington. No way, no how - period. Second, by using that term, I am referring to George Washington's reaction to being asked to be president. He did not want to. After leading the Colonial Army, he was ready to retire from public life. He felt he had done his duty and enough for his country. It was time for somebody else to step up. However, he gave in and became the first president.

Times are not good in this country. The economy is in shambles and Obama's on the ropes. Here's the way I see Hillary successfully playing "The George Washington Card." She calls a surprise press conference. The press will jump all over it, and she'll get tons of exposure because they love the Clintons. Her speech would go something like, "Bill and I love our country dearly. We've both given 100% to serving it through the years. We are concerned and saddened by the fact that millions of our fellow Americans are out of work and hurting financially. The last two administrations have done nothing to ease the suffering. That is why after much prayer, soul searching, and talking it over between ourselves, our family, and our dear friends, we have decided that I will run for the presidency in 2012. It is not something that I particularly want to do, and I realize that I have previously said that I had no desire to run and would not run. I would prefer to spend time with my family. However, I love my country too much to stand by and watch it suffer and crumble. I have enjoyed many blessings and much success in my lifetime. Things that could only be experienced in America. My goal is to be part of the solution that gets America back on her feet so that the generations to come will have the opportunity to enjoy America's greatness as Bill and I have. We ask for your support as we begin this journey to put America back on the right track. Help us make America strong again." Game, set, and match. Stick a fork in Obummer because he would be done. Hillary could even shed a few tears or get choked up while giving the speech. Democrats and Independents would flock to her and Soros and others would pour money into her campaign coffers.

I did not vote for Bill Clinton either time and would not vote for Hillary. Like Obama, the Clinton's political views and mine are polar opposites. Even though Bill was a slimeball, he was an extremely popular slimeball for one reason - the economy was in pretty good shape when he was in office. The Clinton's are still very influential in Democratic circles. If Hillary were to get in the race with a gameplan similar to what I just laid out, she'd smoke Obama in the Democratic Primary. I could even see him pulling out early. Furthermore, I don't see any of the GOP'ers that have officially declared or still exploring their options beating her if she plays her cards as I have laid out. In fact, if the Republicans make the mistake of nominating a liberal such as Romney or Gingrich, Hillary wins the presidency easily. The only way a Republican even makes it close is if they nominate a constitutional and social conservative.

The question is, will she run ? Who knows, but I think it's possible especially if something bad were to happen in the near future, such as the economy take another nosedive. I think she holds a winning hand. However, if Hillary sticks to her guns and doesn't run and the Republicans nominate a liberal, Obama wins re-election. The Republicans are going to have to nominate a constitutional conservative in order to win back the presidency.

Atrocity in the U.S. - politicians killing transplant patients !!

Jan BrewerSeveral weeks ago, Conservatives and others were singing the praises of the Republican Governor of Arizona, Jan Brewer (pictured right). Arizona had just passed their new immigration bill and several other states were considering passing one like it. Brewer stood up to the Obama Administration's threats of a lawsuit over the bill by basically telling them to "bring in on." Now, Brewer has gone from a hero to a big fat zero. As you read the rest of this story, I want to encourage you to click on and read every story linked to and watch the video, also. Every American needs to know this information because it or something similar will eventually happen in your state if something is not done. Mark my words.

My regular blog readers know from my earlier posts on ObamaCare that I was wholeheartedly against it. The biggest reason is because in countries, such as Canada and England, where socialized medicine is currently being practiced that rationing and denial of care occurs as the cost of the program increases. In fact, in my July 16, 2009 post titled "Health Reform", I made the following prediction :
The government will begin rationing care at some point to try to lower costs leading to them deciding who gets treatment and who doesn't. It already happens in Canada and England. Basically, they play God deciding who lives and who dies.
Unfortunately, ObamaCare has not even taken effect yet and it is already happening. People said Sarah Palin was crazy when she said ObamaCare would lead to "death panels." Well, it now appears that she wasn't as crazy as they thought. The State of Arizona Medicaid progam is broke so they are denying coverage for life-saving organ transplants and allowing their sickest residents to suffer and die. In a memo dated September 30, 2010 from the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, it states that effective October 1, 2010 pancreas, lung, bone marrow, liver, and heart "transplants will not be covered for people 21 years or older." It's hard to believe it's happening in the U.S., but it is and it's happening if you're only 21. Just imagine how the elderly will be treated one day.

An article, BrewerCare - Death by Budget Cut on Forbes.com, tells that the cut to Arizona's Medicaid transplant funding amounted to only $1.4 Million. However, it means that 100 Arizonians needing life-saving transplants will NOT get them unless they can somehow raise the money to pay for them. Most of them are so sick they can't work. So, how are they gonna raise the funds ?? Here's the truly shocking part - the state has $2 Million in the budget for "algae research" and used $1.7 Million of federal stimulus money for roof renovations on the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Which is more important - peoples' lives or a roof on a coliseum ?? Save the lives - let the dang roof fall in and the algae research wait !! I'll bet that if they dug a little, they could find enough wasteful pork spending to cut out of the budget to cover the $1.4 Million needed, too. The Democrats in the state legislature have asked Brewer, a so-called Republican, to call a special legislative session to try to find a way to fund the transplant program. She has repeatedly refused. I thought the Republican Party was Pro-Life. Guess I was wrong. This is the first time in my life I can say I'm embarrassed and ashamed to have ever been a Republican.

The video in another story, Jan Brewer Budget Cuts Have Arizona Governor Under Fire, which ran on HuffingtonPost.com really puts a human face on the crisis. Please watch it here.

I am both saddened and angry by the news that the Arizona Government is denying its citizens who need life-saving transplants coverage for them and basically giving them a death sentence by allowing them to die. I can't help thinking "but for the grace of God go I." Rationing is a fact of life in socialized medicine and generally the most expensive care gets rationed first - i.e. transplants. I fear that it will not end in Arizona. It is only a matter of time before other states are effected by it. Once ObamaCare cranks up, it will eventually effect the whole country.

I will probably be attacked by folks on the Right and on the Left for what I am about to say. However, I'm gonna say it anyway because it needs to be said. For years, we have set on our "assets" and voted in politician after politician whom have no morals or ethics and no respect for the value or sanctity of human life. They have then appointed and confirmed judge after judge with none either. We have walked into the voting booth without researching the candidates and repeatedly re-elected the worst of the worst because they had the "R" or "D" by their name or gave us something. We Christians did it, too, and it has resulted in thousands of innocent, unborn babies being savagely murdered. Yes - I said it. Murdered - period. We've called it "choice" and even allowed some of it to be paid for by taxpayer dollars. Now, we are allowing politicians to sentence our sickest citizens to death and calling it "a budget cut." We don't have the money to take care of people who can't take care of themselves, but yet we spend millions upon millions of tax dollars on sports stadiums and other crap we don't need every year. Our priorities are completely screwed up. When are we as Americans gonna say "it ends now !!" When are we gonna have a reverence, a respect, and some honor for the value and sanctity of human life ?? Who are we gonna let the politicians and judges kill next ?? Will it be the cancer patients ?? Or, the diabetics ?? Or, the elderly ?? People, we have blood on our hands. If we don't stop playing politics and stand up for what's right and reject what's wrong, one day Almighty God is gonna judge this country swiftly and thoroughly because we didn't protect human life. It is not of a matter of if, it's a matter of when. Furthermore, we have no one to blame but ourselves because we put the jokers in power who have done it. We, as a country, need to get back to praying, turn back to Him, and get our freakin' priorities back in order. One precious life has already been lost thanks to Brewer's transplant cut. If I were a family member, the state would have already been sued in hopes that it didn't happen to someone else. How many more have to die before Arizonians and Americans everywhere rise up and say, "we're not gonna take it anymore ??"

I'm waiting for your answer. And yes, this Sheepdog is pissed !!

My experience with socialized medicine

My regular readers have heard me ramble on and on for months concerning health care reform. Today, I'm gonna do something I don't really want to do by telling of my personal experience with socialized medicine - Medicare. Why ?? Because the U.S. Senate is promising a vote on ObamaCare by Christmas, and I want everyone to know what you may get because this plan will be very similar to Medicare. As you read today, forget about all of my previous writing on the issue, all the news reports and rumors of rationing, so-called death panels, and inferior care, and think about one thing only - customer service.

Shortly before my heart transplant, I went on disability making me eligible for Medicare. I enrolled in the COBRA plan of my employer when I quit work due to heart disease and stayed on that through July 2008. On August 1, 2008, I went onto a Medicare Advantage Plan administered by Humana. At that time, Humana told me that my anti-rejection medications, Gengraft and Cellcept, would be covered under Medicare Part B. A few months later I went to my pharmacy to pick up a Cellcept refill and was told it was over $600. When I asked why, I was told that I was in the coverage gap a.k.a. the donut hole. I did not understand how that could be. So, when I got home, I called Humana to find out. They told that yes I was in the donut hole because of the high cost of the anti-rejection drugs. However, when meds are covered under Part B, they do not count toward your total annual drug costs, but apparently Humana had put them under Part D so they did count. Therefore, I hit the donut hole pre-maturely leaving me with no drug coverage the rest of the year.

I hit the roof and filed an appeal because Humana had not covered the anti-rejections meds the way they told me they would. On November 17, 2008, I received a letter from Humana granting my appeal and putting my anti-rejection meds under Part B where they said they would be processed originally. It also said they had to re-work the claims and then issue a refund to me for my overpayments. It amounted to almost $1000. I called the appeals representative the next week to find out how long this would take, because I now had a monstrous credit card bill to pay because of their screw-up. Finally, nearly three weeks later, she returned the call and said it would take 4-6 weeks to get everything cleared up. So, I'm thinking that by the end of January 2009, it should be settled. Man, was I wrong.

January came and went. Then February - then March - then April - then May, June, and July. Finally, in late August of 2009, my overpayment was refunded. It didn't take 4-6 weeks - it took almost 8 months (32 weeks) !! During this time, I'm called the Humana rep at least every two weeks and sometimes every week. I either got no answers or had to wait a week for a return phone telling me that they don't know when it's gonna be finalized. I was considering a lawsuit. How long do you think they would have waited to stop my benefits if I hadn't paid my premiums ?? Heck, they would have stopped them quicker than a Democrat can vote "yea" on a tax increase. But, I had to wait for what they owed me. Typical government bureacracy.

After I got my refund, it still wasn't over. I had to get new "prior authorization" done by my doctor to get the anti-rejection meds paid for even though I was told the previous ones were good "indefinitely." I learned that "indefinitely" in socialized medicine speak could mean anywhere from a day, to a week, to a year. Basically, it's until they change their mind. Whereas, anyone with common sense knows for that for a transplant patient it means for the rest of your life. You can't stop taking your meds or you'll die.

Then, in November 2009, I get a phone call from Humana at 7:30 one morning telling me that effective January 1, 2010 my anti-rejection meds are gonna be switched back to Medicare Part D from Part B. All the time spent getting the mess fixed was for naught. They were screwing it up again !! Once again, Humana told me they were gonna cover them one way and then said, "No. Sorry. We've decided to do it this way." They've done me that way on doctor's visits, too. I'm sick of it.

I've been told that many people on Medicare love it and that everyone doesn't have experiences like mine. That is probably true, but let's think about something. We Americans like everything fast. We want fast food, cars, internet, and don't want to wait on service. Depending on who you listen to, there are currently anywhere from 20-40 million Americans without health insurance. So, let's say that ObamCare is passed and to be conservative, let's go with 20 million uninsured that will all join the ObamaCare rolls. Also, let's say 5% of them have a bad customer service experience like me. That's 1 million hacked off Americans. Furthermore, let's say the pessimistic pundits are right and that the plan is to eventually get ALL Americans on government run health care. That's over 300 million people. What if 5% of them have a bad experience. Know how many people that is ? Try 15 million !! If 15 million Americans, who want everything fast get the same kind of lousy customer service from ObamaCare that I have received from Medicare, can you imagine the riots and the weeping, waling , and gnashing of teeth ? It will be ugly. If the politicians in D.C. think people are pissed now, they ain't seen nothing yet.

I know very well that our health care system in the U.S. is not perfect but it's the best in the world. Too many people, including me, with pre-existing conditions are discriminated against daily trying to purchase health insurance. Private insurance companies will NOT sell us a policy and that's wrong. So, how do we fix it ?? The only way to end this is to update our anti-discrimination laws to prohibit insurance companies from discriminating against people with pre-existing conditions. Insurance companies would then be required to sell a policy to anyone who wants it and can pay for it. However, if that's done they will simply charge enormous premiums that we can't afford to cover their increased costs. To fix that, the law would also need to set a cap on the premiums the insurance companies can charge or require that everyone be charged the same amount. As someone who believes in free enterprise, I've got a problem with this solution because healthy people would get charged the same as the sick or more than they should to make up for the extra costs incurred because of the sick. That's not fair either. Plus, we'd be forcing a unconstitutional government mandate on privately owned insurance companies. So, the question is - what'll we do ?? We're in a catch-22 because neither of these is gonna fly in a free country and to be honest with you - they probably shouldn't.

Two quick things and I'm done. One - if you do NOT want to have this kind of lousy customer service experience with your health care in the future, you better take the time to contact your Senators (click here) and tell them that today. Two - next week there will be no politics on the blog. In honor of our Savior's, Jesus Christ, birthday, they'll be a couple of "Christmassy" posts, but that's all.

ObamaCare equals NO CARE

Congress will reportedly vote on health care reform a.k.a. socialized medicine a.k.a. universal health care a.k.a. ObamaCare as early as this weekend. Please watch this video from ABC's 20 / 20 and then if you feel as strongly as I do that ObamaCare is not the answer to reforming our health care system, then contact your Senators and Congressman immediately and tell them to vote "absolutely, positively no" on ObamaCare. The contact information for your Senators or Congressman can be found in the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives links on the right side of my blog page.

It is rumored that ABC fired John Stossel for making this video. He now works for Fox. Also, if you get my e-mail updates, the video link will not come through in the e-mail. All you have to do to view the video is click on "ObamaCare equals NO CARE" in the e-mail title and you'll be directed to my blog where you can view the video.
