Another reason NOT to eat green beans

Green-beansFor years, my parents, my wife, my friends, and even my doctors have tried to get me to eat my veggies. They've had no luck. I don't care much for veggies. I'm a "meat and taters" guy. The story I ran across for today's post gives me another reason to stay away from the green stuff. As if I needed another reason - veggies are just nasty.

I ran across this story on MyFoxPhoenix.com from about a year ago. Mother Finds Animal Head in Veggies tells about a Houston mom who found a surprise in her family's food. Ernestine Jamison was preparing a bag of Pictsweet frozen green beans for dinner when she discovered a snake's head in the green beans. Yes, you read that correctly - a snake's head.

Ms. Jamison said that when she contacted Pictsweet about the incident, they told her that it was not a snake's head but a frog's head. Yeah, like that really makes a difference. Oh, by the way, they also informed her that they were not "liable" for the the incident and offered her $150. Wasn't that nice of them ?? Apparently, the corporate attorney's "uh-oh" radar went off. In my opinion, it's just another reason to be a meat-atarian. Veggies could be hazardous to your health !!

World's first organ donor dies a hero

Kidney location after transplantation. The guardian.co.uk recently reported that the world's first organ donor has passed away at the age of 79 in Maine. In 1954, Ronald Lee Herrick was a living kidney donor for his twin brother who was suffering and dying from chronic nephritis (kidney inflammation). The surgery was the first ever successful transplant and gave Ronald's brother eight years of life he would not have had otherwise.

According to the article, World's First Organ Donor Dies Aged 79, before the successful transplant from Ronald to his brother, organ transplants had been attempted by doctors all over the world. All of them failed. However, The Herrick's successful transplant led to thousands of additional kidney transplants and ultimately to the successful transplants of other organs.

Ronald grew up in Massachusetts and served in the U.S. Army. He was a hero in more ways than one. The report says that he insisted on donating the kidney to his brother, because, "He was the only one who could save his brother's life." His love for his brother not only saved his brother's life but spurred the improvements in technology that have successfully saved thousands of lives since that miraculous day 56 years ago.

Thanks Ronald. I am one of them who is alive because of you. You are a hero.
