A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
I don't deny it - I like guns, and I've never understood why many politicians, judges, and others often don't understand or choose to distort or lie about the meaning of The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Furthermore, it seems rather ludicrous that it took the 2008 U.S. Supreme Court Decision District of Columbia vs. Heller to finally nail down the fact that the right to keep and bear arms is a fundamental individual right. The 2nd Amendment's meaning is so simple. The "militia" is the citizenry (us, We the People), "keep" means "to own," and "bear" means "to carry." Furthermore, this "right" is a natural right NOT given by ANY government, but received by each of us at birth. The role of the government - protect that right - period.
Today, Americans own over 250 million firearms with one-third of them being handguns. Guns are, for many, part of the American way of life and are used for hunting, target shooting, and self-defense. In fact, studies show that guns are used more than 2 million times a year for self-defense. Defensive Gun Use (DGU) saves countless lives each year often without firing a shot. The mere presence of a gun often scares off cowardly criminals and increases a potential victim's ability to defend theirself. Despite what the anti-gun crowd claims, guns are used more often to prevent crime than to commit it. Americans in 40 States can now carry concealed firearms for self-defense when outside the home, and the violent crime rate in those states is less than the national average.
Many U.S. businesses, other organizations, and celebrities oppose the right to keep and bear arms by backing anti-gun legislation, funding anti-gun politicians, or prohibiting carry by lawful permit holders on their property. They insist that gun bans and so-called "Safe Zones" will make people safer. Unfortunately, these schemes do just the opposite because criminals WILL NOT abide by them and the law-abiding are left defenseless in these areas.
So-called "Gun Free Zones" needed to be banned - immediately.
